Mezcal Reina is an organic handmade spirit, born in the mountains of Oaxaca close to the cost of
Puerto Escondido in a delightful village called Sola de Vega. The wild Tobalá used to be abundant in
that area where Don Felix, the master mezcal maker, cuts the wild agave growing on the side of the
mountains with his sons and carries is it down on his donkeys.
These tons of plants take days to collect and prepare (all the plants leaves must be cut off leaving only
the heart of the plant: the piña), to add to the previously dug out underground oven (earthen pits)
whilst wood burns warming it up for the hearts of the Tobalá to be cooked in. Once all the plants have
been placed in the oven, it is covered for the following four days and unearthed when the Master has
decided the smell emitted is that of perfectly cooked “piña”. Carried one by one the plants are taken
to a channel made from wood and is beaten to a pulp with a wooden mallet.

The juices and some of the fibers from the plant are then transferred to a barrel filled with fresh river
water from the nearby Atoyac River which has a spring flowing through the distillery. Here the
fermentation process begins and is completely natural. Don Felix checks on his barrels continuously
as it is imperative to have the right timing for the fermentation to be finished without exceeding the
perfect point.

Once this is decided, the liquid is transferred to a clay pot which is lit underneath with oak wood from
the distillery trees and has clean cool spring water pouring on a stainless-steel top cover to create the
condensation needed to deliver this outstanding spirit its first distillation, which is then distilled a
second time giving it the premium quality this subtle mezcal possesses.
Don Felix’s’ special process produces a mezcal which is smooth and lightly smoked, unlike many
mezcales it has a subtle aromatic flavour which lets you savour the herbal tones of the Tobalá. This
mezcal has won praise from the organic and artisanal chamber of mezcales in Oaxaca as has never left
the region, until now.

quality mezcal. We only use wild agave, due to the plant needing 18 years to grow before it can be
harvested, and the reforestation process only started 5 years ago.
Our Mezcal is produced with the most sustainable and authentic process, and it is certified by the Consejo Regulador del Mezcal (CRM) which is Mexico’s regulatory body for Mezcal production as it is a product denominated at origin. It is fermented in wooden barrels, with the water from the Atoyac River, which has a stream passing through the distillery. It is double distilled in clay pots which contribute to an earthy spirit and adds minerality to the notes. It is fashioned in the ancestral method, which means it requires intense labour, the pulp is beaten by hand with a wooden mallet. It is reduced to 37º of alcohol and uses only Tobalá agave.
